What I owe all the Yew wood on this site to: a wonderful old tree that grew on Old Sarum’s fort. It was cut down to help preserve the impressive man-made mound there. Yew trees are incredible organisms – by far the oldest living things in the UK (some can live for over 3000 years!), with anti-carcinogenic chemicals in their bark, wood with unparalleled strength and flexibility, extraordinary powers of regeneration (beams long ago built in to houses have been known to start sprouting roots!), leaves that are poisonous enough to kill and an end-grain that is truly stunning. I thought it only right that this tree gets to live on in some way. All the foliage depicted here has been made with its slices.
