I was commissioned to come up with a tree-themed artwork for a blank brick wall. Being ecologically minded, I wanted to develop work which wouldn’t just be aesthetic but may also benefit the abundant wildlife in the local area. I came up with a design made of multiple different compartments which could either be bug/bee hotels or bird houses. Each of the bug hotels contains a different species of wood (e.g. yew, oak, willow, beech, hazel…) which can be drilled with holes of diameters between 2-10mm to turn them into bee hotels. House martins and great tits have now taken up residence in the installation:
I am currently looking for other opportunities to expand and develop this idea on other blank walls, in schools and other public spaces.
